🎬 The Last Curtain Call: Saying Goodbye to Friends, the Old Cinema Beside Ethlane

Estancia Town Proper, Iloilo

As twilight settles over Estancia town proper, motorcycles glide past, tricycles wait for passengers, and people hurry home after another ordinary day.

Amid the movement and noise stands an old building beside Ethlane Cinema — its windows empty, its walls worn thin by decades of sun and rain.

To some, it is merely an old, unsafe structure awaiting demolition. But to generations of Estanciahanons, it is a place full of stories.

Long before it stood quiet, this building was a cinema: where stories flickered across the silver screen, where families laughed, where young hearts fell in love with tales from faraway places.

Then it found a second life, as Friends.

For many of us, Friends was never “just a restaurant.” It was the meeting place: where first dates happened, where old friends caught up, where birthdays were celebrated and secrets shared over simple meals. It was the corner we all knew — the place we’d say: “Let’s meet at Friends.”

Today, paint peels from its walls. Glass is gone from its windows. A sign hangs plainly now: Wanted: Building Demolition Contractor.

It feels like the final curtain falling.

We understand why. Time has weakened this structure; safety must come first. Sometimes, moving forward means letting go of what can no longer stand.

But demolishing walls can never demolish what happened inside them.

The first movie watched there. The first shy smile across a table. The sound of laughter carrying through the room. The friendships that started here, and lasted long after we walked out the door.

One day, something new will rise on this corner. New lights will shine, new doors will open, and new memories will take root.

But for those who remember the cinema, and the warm tables of Friends — this place will never truly be gone.

Because buildings are made of concrete. But the heart of a town is made of people. And the memories we made here? Those stay with us, forever.
